Leak #1: Over-Folding the Big Blind
Cost: ~4 bb/100 — the single biggest leak at microstakes. Most players fold BB vs BTN 60–70%, but GTO defends ~55–60% vs a 2.5x open at 100bb. Every extra fold lets the BTN steal wider and wider.
GTO defense vs BTN 2.5x at 100bb: call with any suited hand, most offsuit broadways (KTo+, QJo+), all pairs, and even hands like T8o and 97s. Fold only the worst offsuit junk (72o–85o, etc.).
Fix: Study BB 100bb chart and note which suited hands GTO calls. Then check your tracker: filter "BB vs BTN open, folded" and count how many were GTO calls. Drill those spots in Lab drills.
Leak #2: C-Betting Too Much (or Too Little)
Cost: ~2–3 bb/100. Two opposite leaks:
- Over-c-betting: Betting 80%+ on every flop. GTO c-bets ~35% on wet boards (J♥T♥4♣) and ~65% on dry boards (K♣7♢2♠). Betting too much on wet boards gets raised and floated.
- Under-c-betting: Checking too much on dry boards where GTO bets small with high frequency. You miss value and let opponents realize equity for free.
Fix: Learn board texture. Dry boards (paired, rainbow, high-card) = bet small, high frequency. Wet boards (connected, suited, low) = check more, bet larger when you do. Our Replayer shows GTO c-bet frequencies per board.
Leak #3: Folding Too Much vs C-Bets
Cost: ~2 bb/100. GTO defends ~58% vs a 33% pot c-bet (MDF = 75% pot / (75% + 33%) ≈ 69%, but equity realization lowers it to ~58%). Most microstakes players fold 65%+ — massively over-folding.
What to defend: Any pair, any draw (gutshot+), backdoor flush + overcard, and even ace-high on dry boards. Fold only complete air without backdoors.
Fix: Read How to Defend vs C-Bets for hand-by-hand examples, then drill flop defense spots.
Leak #4: Playing Too Many Hands UTG
Cost: ~1.5 bb/100. UTG VPIP should be ~15% at 100bb. Many microstakes players open 22%+ UTG — including hands like AJo, KQo, QJo, and small suited connectors that bleed EV when dominated or multi-way.
Fix: Study UTG 100bb chart. Notice how tight it is — AJo is often a fold, KQo is borderline. Compare to your UTG VPIP in your tracker. Tighten up and watch your red line improve.
Leak #5: Not Value-Betting Thin Enough
Cost: ~2 bb/100. Microstakes players check back too much on the river with hands like top pair weak kicker or second pair — fearing a raise. But vs calling stations who over-call, thin value bets print money.
GTO river value threshold is thinner than you think — on many runouts, GTO value-bets second pair for 33% pot. If your opponent calls too much, you should value-bet even thinner.
Fix: Review river spots in Replayer where you checked back. Would GTO bet? If yes and opponent is a calling station, you missed value.
Bonus Leak: Tilt and Bankroll Mismanagement
Beyond technical leaks, the biggest win-rate killer is tilt — playing worse after bad beats. Lab cannot fix tilt directly, but it helps indirectly:
- Objective feedback: Seeing "you lost 0.3bb here, GTO loses 0.2bb too" reframes bad beats as normal variance, not personal failure.
- Process over results: Lab scores you on GTO adherence, not hand outcomes. You learn to feel good about correct folds even when you would have won.
- Bankroll tracking: Lab dashboard shows bb/100 trends over time — zoom out and see the upward slope despite daily swings.
Combine Lab technical training with mental game work (books like The Mental Game of Poker) for the full package.
How AI Fixes Leaks Automatically
Finding leaks manually takes hours of filtering in your tracker. AI Poker Lab automates it:
- Import hands — paste PokerStars/GG hand history into Replayer.
- Leak Detector scans 12 core leaks and quantifies each in bb/100 with severity. See your leaks.
- AI Coach explains each leak in plain English — why it happens, what GTO does, and a heuristic to fix it.
- Drill Engine auto-generates 5-card drills from your worst leak. Spaced repetition until the leak closes.
- Re-measure weekly — watch bb/100 climb as leaks close. The loop is closed.
Students report 3–8 bb/100 improvement within 60 days. The fastest win-rate boost is fixing BB defense and c-bet defense — start there.
FAQ
What is the biggest leak at microstakes?
Over-folding the Big Blind — costing ~4 bb/100 for most players. Study BB 100bb and defend wider vs steals.
How do I find my leaks?
Import hands into Replayer and check Leak Detector — it scans 12 leaks and shows bb/100 loss per leak. Or filter your tracker by position and compare VPIP to GTO.
How long to fix a leak?
With focused drilling (10 min/day on one leak), most leaks improve measurably within 2–3 weeks. Lab spaced repetition accelerates this.
Are these leaks the same at higher stakes?
Higher stakes players have smaller leaks but the same categories. At 200NL+, leaks shift toward postflop (turn/river decisions) rather than preflop. Lab covers both.
